oct 26 2009 The second location of Library! is at Kennedy Library for Science Café on October 27th. Also in attendance: The Reading Chair. Science Café is an informal speaker series on scientific topics, led by an expert. The series stimulates discussions in the arts and sciences; encourages open, easy-to-understand conversation exploring scientific topics and interdisciplinary interactions. The topic for Tuesday, Oct. 27th: Is it still a book? This informal discussion will focus on what makes a book a book. Participants can cozy up and test drive a new Kindle or handle beautiful bound books to compare and contrast this idea. Cal Poly Graphic Communication professors Lorraine Donegan and Ken Macro, along with Cuesta College Fine Arts Professor David Prochaska will lead the discussion that runs from 4:30 to 6:00 pm, at the 2nd floor Café Lounge.

Readers of all ages will be able to find books, sketchbooks, or an actual piece of book art. Each piece will have a library card documenting its travels. When a reader checks a piece out, they’re asked to sign the card and leave those in a box located on top of the rack. Borrowers are encouraged to leave an item for lending. We encourage creative annotation to all the art pieces, and we encourage personal notes in the books left by readers. Each new location of Library! will be posted at http://www.readinginpublic.com oct 10 2009

Placing the first sign was far easier than we thought, whew. And we're sad that the face will be hidden by a (transparent) handle.

a teaser for Reading In Public project #2. We just got our stickers back from Frank at Linson Signs (hi, Frank!). Library! will be an honor system (take a book and leave one in its place) book exchange of sorts (Catherine insists it’s more of a culture exchange) where each book will have a bookplate documenting its travels. Library! itself will start its journey at Steynberg Gallery on Monterey. Here for his WWII 86th Infantry BlackHawk Division 50th reunion and sculpture dedication at Camp San Luis! This was his first time back in 50 years and he and his wife came early to see how much San Luis Obispo has changed. They both love the arts and reading. http://www.flickr.com/photos/readinginpublic/ sept 4 2009
We need a NAME. a Name of an unusual lending Library of sorts. Library that is outdoors or in public spaces. Library that is smallish in nature. (3.5ft x 2.5ft) Library that is portable so to speak. WHAT would you name it? Here are some ideas we have so far. Tell us what you think and/or tell us your suggestions. email us.

ASCAP (google them) requirements have led us to cancel our Live! on Aisle 9 intervention. All of us have so much admiration and respect for musicians and composers and our intention has always been to do right by the arts community, yet ASCAP’s fees and regulations were insurmountable for a fledgling art collective. Don’t fret. We have many other art interventions afloat and more to be posted soon. Do drop us a note and let us know what you think of the project, E-mail: info@readinginpublic.com THANK you readers, viewers and Peter Steynberg! About: Reading In Public (RIP!) was formed to celebrate the written word by way of community performance in public spaces. The project began as a response to the shifting landscape in publishing, and the realization that more and more of us are writing in public, as bloggers and tweeters, for instance. Similarly, we seek to broadcast words in public, through the simple act of contemplative reading on a noisy street corner, or as performance, with readers directly engaging onlookers. On Saturday, August 1st, we held a one day event in San Luis Obispo, California, the first of many that we hope to do. We wheeled this, our Reading Chair, which was specially designed for the occasion, to various downtown locations, where assigned readers took turns sitting and reading. Our readers were people of all ages and walks of life who shared a passion not only for words, but for story telling. Some of them submitted an online application, and some were invited to read. They chose their own reading materials and crafted their own performances. Details of the project are at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/readinginpublic/ & Flickr set about the chair & Our Website: www.readinginpublic.com images courtesy of: www.myspace.com/steynberggallery |
